 Harvard is home to various digital collections associated with Japan. Some are faculty driven, while others are sponsored by various libraries, museums, and research institutions across campus. Not all projects are specific to Japan alone, but all contain content related to Japan.

[Visit Chirimen Prints](https://projects.iq.harvard.edu/hylj/galleries/chirimen-hanga) Introduced around 1860, chirimen prints were crinkled paper prints created by the usual woodblock print process. This collection contains colored chirimen prints of 59 sheets in 55 sets from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. [ちりめん版画を見る](https://projects.iq.harvard.edu/hylj/galleries/chirimen-hanga) ちりめん版画とは、通常の木版画に紙が縮んでしわができるように手を加えた浮世絵のことであり、1860年ごろ導入された手法です。このコレクションは、19世紀後半から20世紀前半の59枚55セットからなる多色ちりめん版画です。

[Visit the Digitized Scrolls from the Japanese Manuscript Collection, 1158-1591](https://hls.harvard.edu/library/digital-collections/digitized-scrolls-from-the-japanese-manuscript-collection-1158-1591/?redir=1) The **Japanese Manuscript Digital Collection** at the Harvard Law School consists of twenty-two medieval legal manuscripts and annotated facsimiles that span a nearly 450 year period from 1150 to 1591. These documents provide a rare window into legal transactions from the Heian (794–1185), Kamakura (1185–1333), Moromachi (1333–1568), and Momoyama (1568–1600) periods, and frequently focus on land and property issues, as well as edicts and judicial rulings. Part of a large donation presented to the Harvard Law Library in 1936, around the time of the University’s 300th anniversary, these *komonjo* represent one of the finest collections of their type outside Japan. These images primarily document the early history of commercial photography in Japan and are representative of what is often called Japanese tourist photography or Yokohama shashin. [Visit the Etz-Trudell Lantern Slides](https://images.hollis.harvard.edu/primo-explore/search?query=any,contains,etz-trudell&tab=default_tab&search_scope=HVD_FAL_IMG&vid=HVD_IMAGES&lang=en_US&offset=0) This Fine Arts Library collection includes 500 hand-colored lantern slides depicting images acquired from Universalist minister Roger Frederick Etz (1855-1950) and his 1934 tour of Asia. Most of the images depict Japanese landscape scenes, agricultural production, craftsmen and their workshops, as well as stores and merchandise displays. Also included are images of silk production, tea harvesting, religious ceremonies, and pilgrimage sites and shrines in areas such as Tokyo, Kyoto, Yokohama, and elsewhere. Wilson Expeditions to China, Japan, Formosa, and Islands in the Japanese Sea, 1899-1919](https://curiosity.lib.harvard.edu/expeditions-and-discoveries/feature/ernest-h-wilson-expeditions-to-china-japan-korea-formosa-and-islands-in-the-japanese-sea-1899-1919) The **Ernest H. Wilson Expeditions to China, Japan, Formosa, and Islands in the Japanese Sea, 1899-1919** is part of a larger open collection related to holdings on sponsored expeditions and scientific discoveries within the Harvard libraries, archives, museums, and observatories. Ernest H. Wilson made six trips to East Asia to collect rare plants and seeds, ultimately collecting over 100,000 specimens of more than 5,000 species and introducing many new plants to gardens in the West. While in Japan, Wilson studied plants in cultivation, including Japanese cherries; collected conifers and yews; and first saw the dward azaleas of Kurume. Resources range from the 16th century to modern maps and geographic information systems (GIS) layers. To find maps of Japan, search for "Japan" or other place name in the subject. To search for only georeferenced images, use the search term "raster image" in the title field. Numerous digitized materials on Japanese immigration is contained within this resource, including but not limited to government papers, speeches, personal memoirs, photographs, and documentation by Japanese employment companies. The project encompasses Tokugawa period designs that were practical and for personal use, as well as those that were created in the Modern period for a mass market. [Visit Linked Archive of Asian Postcards](https://asian-postcards.mydatabase.jp/) Beginning in 2015, the Center for Integrated Area Studies (now the Institute for Southeast Asian Studies) at Kyoto University and Lafayette College embarked on a project that would create a linked, open-access postcard database that documents the history of imperial Japan and its Asian empire. The following year, in 2016, Harvard-Yenching Library joined the project, and through international and inter-institutional collaborative research efforts, a valuable shared expansion in Japanese-period postcards of colonized East Asia is now accessible through this linked archive [アジアのはがき結合アーカイブを見る](https://asian-postcards.mydatabase.jp/) 2015年初頭、京都大学地域研究総合情報センター（現・東南アジア地域研究研究所）とラファイエット大学が、大日本帝国とアジア帝国史に関するオープンアクセスの葉書データベースを繋げるプロジェクトに乗り出しました。翌年の2016年にはハーバードイェンチン図書館が加わり、海外と団体間の共同研究の努力によって、日本が東アジア諸国を植民地にした時代の貴重な葉書アーカイブが広く共有し拡大されました。

[Visit the Oliver Wendell Holmes Digital Suite](http://library.law.harvard.edu/suites/owh/index.php/search?query=kaneko%20kentaro) The Harvard Law School Library's **Digital Suite of Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.** offers access to a rich collection of archival material, and includes more than 1,000 digitized letters, photographs, postcards, and other materials related to the Meiji period statesman and diplomat, **Kaneko Kentarō (1853-1942)**, who was a lifelong friend and correspondent to Holmes. These papers include details related to his experiences as both a student and visiting diplomat within the United States, as well as his contribution and perspectives on the newly created western-style constitution for Japan. Other subject areas within these papers include war time Japan; immigration and the gradual exclusion of Japanese; the Kanto Earthquake of 1923; and much more. [Visit Petzold Scrolls Collection](https://projects.iq.harvard.edu/hylj/galleries/petzold-scrolls-collection) This site allows you to look through some of the notable items in the Japanese collection at Harvard-Yenching Library, including those of the **Petzold Scroll Collection**, which includes 424 digitized scrolls acquired from the family of Bruno Petzold (1873-1949) in 1951. The collection is a valuable resource for Japanese Buddhism and reflects Petzold's interest in Tendai Buddhism.
